2) Economy
MallorcaTourism I - new record figures in July 2014
Mallorca tourism produced record breaking figures once again in July 2014: 2.4 million visitors came to the Balearics, which is a 4,8 % increase compared to July of last year. In total, 7.5 million tourists have visited the islands up to the end of July this year which means that in the first seven months there was an increase of 1.4 %. German visitors lead the way, followed by Brits and Italians. Visitors from mainland Spain have also increased by 10 % as compared to last year.
MallorcaTourism II: 2014 - 30 % less Russians
Whereby the number of tourists from all over the world to Mallorca have increased this year, the number of Russian visitors has dropped significantly. There are 30 % less Russian visitors this year as compared to last year. This is due mainly to the poor exchange rate of the Rouble compared to the Euro which has lost 17 % due to the conflict in the Ukraine and so travel has become more expensive for the Russian people who prefer the All inclusive vacation. Russian tour operators have their own hotels mainly on the east coast of the island and with this type of tourism losses are more difficult to handle. This situation is also creating greater competition between Russian tour operators and travel agencies some of whom have closed over the last year.
MallorcaTourism III: Gay Tourism brings in 1.5 billion Euros
Gay tourism in Mallorca has become a very important factor in the island’s economy. 290 hotels and 200 business enterprises are dedicated to this target group which has shown an increase of 25 % and who spend up to 1,5 billion Euros per year. On average they spend € 50 more per person.
(3) The law, taxes and finance
Apartment holiday rental: The hoteliers association have initiated legal action against illegal rentals
Just to recall: According to the Balearic tourism law, rental of apartments is basically illegal. At the moment only the rental of detached and semi-detached houses is permitted. Apartment owners suspect that the hotel association’s lobby has had a strong effect on getting this bill passed. It is no wonder then, that in a press release the hoteliers association have announced their decision to take legal action against these illegal rentals. Website operators should also be aware that advertising such rentals is also illegal. The next step is to pass this information onto the Balearic Minister of Tourism and the tax authorities.

Diego Arango Arango, Hanne Holze – the naive send their regards
Originally naïve art was a group of untrained people who presented their dreams of an ideal world. Most of their works represented rural life, but from this a modern art movement has developed which is identified by a childish representation. The Minker & Partner art gallery has put together an exhibition of two international artists. Diego Arango Arangowas born in Columbia but has lived on Mallorca since 1988. He paints in a naïve style that brings together symbols and dreamlike images. On the current art scene he is classed as the ‘sophisticated naïve artist’. Hanne Holzehas lived on Mallorca since 1998. She observes people and parodies them in her paintings- always positive, benevolent, loving and carefree characters that are perfectly rotund with sometimes strange anatomies.
