2. Mallorca – Construction, Economy laws and taxes
(1) Construction
Palma de Mallorca: The Lluis Sitjar football stadium is to be demolished
The Lluis Sitjar football stadium which was built in 1945 has been standing empty now for almost seven years and is in a sorry state of repair. The stadium was previously home to the Real Mallorca football club. Recently a construction firm have reported that the stadium and many of the buildings surrounding it are in danger of collapsing and for this reason Palma council have decided to demolish it this year. The cost of 1 million Euros will be borne by the owners at a cost of € 1,800 per title deed. 33 % of the shares belong to Real Mallorca.
Llucmajor: 68 new houses to be built in Ses Palmeres
Llucmajor, which due to its surface area is the largest municipality on Mallorca, has changed its land use plans and has therefore created the opportunity to build 68 family houses. The properties will be built on plots of between 600 m² and 700 m² in Ses Palmeres, which lies between S’Arenal and Maioris. The promoter is Son Mulato. The opposition have voted against the change of land use plan. The construction of a secondary school and a new medical centre is also planned for the Maioris urbanisation.
Alcudia: Work on the Santa Anna church has revealed remains of a basilica dating from the 13th century
In 70 BC the Roman city of Pollentia was founded and was at that time the largest settlement in the Balearics, and is the site on which now stands the town of Alcudia. For several years excavations have been underway in the region and already a Roman forum and theatre have been discovered. Further information regarding the archaeological site is available on www.alcudia.net/Pollentia/es. During restoration work on the Santa Ana church remains of a basilica dating from the 13th century were found and is also believed that a cemetery could also be located there.
Son Servera/ Cala Bona: Caravan park for 22 campers
Camping or caravan on Mallorca? To date this topic has been of little importance on Mallorca as the municipalities have chosen to ignore rules and regulations regarding the use and construction of such facilities and what does not have rules does not exist. Astonishingly enough, Spain has some 40,000 caravan owners, and throughout Europe that number rises to 1,5 million. As of the end of May 2014 a caravan park opened on the road to Cala Bona, in Son Servera, not far from the beach of Port Vell with a capacity for 22 caravans. The site is already connected do the sewerage system and shortly drinking water will be installed.
Campos/Santanyi: Widening of the dual carriageway
The stretch of road between Campos and Santanyi in the southeast of the island is to be repaired and widened. To begin with the road will be widened in both directions. During the course of the work new ducts are to be laid. The work should take two months and following its completion the road will in parts be resurfaced with new asphalt. Total costs are in the region of 1.5 million Euros. The road between Campos and Santanyi is the busiest road in the southeast of the island with some 9,000 vehicles travelling along it.
2) Economy
New flight routes between Palma and various European airports
For the coming summer season several new international flight routes are planned. Vueling plan to fly twice a week, Tuesdays and Saturdays to the French town of Rennes; they are also planning to fly to Munich on Thursdays and Fridays. Germania has also increased their programme with flights each Saturday to Frankfurt. Further new flight routes for the coming season also include: Sevilla, Asturien, Bordeaux, Manchester, Norwich, Aberdeen, Birmingham, Friedrichshafen, Dresden, Brüssels, Billund und Riga.
Intended port privatisation plans have been withdrawn for the time being
Newsletter has already commented on the fact that there were plans to privatise four ports on the island: Cala Bona in Son Servera, Porto Cristo, Colonia Sant Jordi and Andratx. Other ports under discussion included von Soller, Pollensa, Cala Ratjada, Portocolom, Portopetro and Cala Figuera. The tourist minister Jaime Martinez has announced that the plans have been shelved for the moment as they are awaiting the results of a previously commissioned study of the development of the demand of moorings.

c) Diego Arango Arango, Hanne Holze – the naive send their regards
Originally naïve art was a group of untrained people who presented their dreams of an ideal world. Most of their works represented rural life, but from this a modern art movement has developed which is identified by a childish representation. The Minker & Partner art gallery has put together an exhibition of two international artists. Diego Arango Arangowas born in Columbia but has lived on Mallorca since 1988. He paints in a naïve style that brings together symbols and dreamlike images. On the current art scene he is classed as the ‘sophisticated naïve artist’. Hanne Holzehas lived on Mallorca since 1998. She observes people and parodies them in her paintings- always positive, benevolent, loving and carefree characters that are perfectly rotund with sometimes strange anatomies.
